The Tenino girls basketball team needed a late comeback to earn its first league win, as the Beavers overcame a seven-point deficit in the final four minutes to beat Rochester 40-33 on Tuesday.
“It was just really exciting to see,” Tenino coach Kirsi Gofinch said.
The first quarter was a defensive battle, but Tenino found its footing in the second and took a seven-point lead into halftime.
Rochester flipped the script in the third, though, outscoring the Beavers 19-7 in the frame to take a lead into the fourth. With just under four minutes to play, the Warriors still led by seven.
Tenino stormed back, however, allowing just four points in the fourth quarter and scoring enough in the final frame to complete the comeback.
“In the third, we had some communication issues,” Gofinch said. “Once we resolved that, I think we were fine … We attacked the basket and played great defense to recover. It was really special.”
Holly Thoren finished with 13 points, while Chloe Grayless and Kylie Gonia both scored six. Brianna Asay finished with five, Brynn Williams scored four, and Georgia Gore and Keira Laughlin both added three.
Lizzie Hoover led the Warriors with a game-high 15, while Lexi Dupont scored six. Sadies Dupont, Keikilani Kinsella-Cintron, and Layna Demers added four each.
Rochester (1-13, 0-4 1A Evergreen) will be back in action at Hoquiam on Thursday, while Tenino (4-11, 1-3 1A Evergreen) will have the rest of the week off to prepare for a home matchup against Montesano on Monday.
