Tenino takes down Kalama in low-scoring battle

A Miguel Espinoza rushing touchdown four minutes into the fourth was only Tenino’s second touchdown of the night on Friday in Kalama, but thanks to a strong defensive effort, it stood as the game-winning score in the Beavers’ 14-8 victory.

“A lot of mistakes on offense,” Tenino coach Darren Tinnerstet said. “It’s a good thing our defense is as good as it is, because it really saved us tonight.”

The Tenino defense gave up a long touchdown drive to Kalama early, but pitched a shutout after that.

Michael Lanning got the Beavers (2-0) on the board in the second with a short touchdown run, but they missed the two-point try, and the score remained 8-6 Kalama until Espinoza’s go-ahead score two quarters later.

Kalama was on the move late with a chance to tie the game and potentially reclaim the lead, but Kamron Burrow forced a fumble near midfield, and Hunter Rogers fell on it to give Tenino the ball with around two minutes left.

It was the third turnover that the Beavers forced on the night.

Tenino went for it on a fourth down moments later to try and ice the game, and Mason Metcalf picked up the first on a naked bootleg.

“We’ll take a win any day,” Tinnerstet said. “But we gotta clean some stuff up.”

Tenino will be back at home next Friday, Sept. 19, to host Adna in another non-league affair.
