Three people have died following a crash on Interstate 5 near the Scatter Creek Rest Area Sunday morning, according to the Washington State Patrol.

As of 6:30 a.m., the three-vehicle crash was blocking all northbound lanes as law enforcement and medical response teams processed the scene, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

“I am saddened to announce that three people have died as a result of this collision,” Trooper John Dattilo said, noting a detour will take northbound motorists through the rest area to bypass the crash. “Please be patient with the closure while we investigate, and if you are traveling northbound, drive slowly through the rest area.”

Dattilo said one of the involved cars was traveling in the wrong direction and struck another car head on. Three people died in the initial collision.

“Both vehicles were blocking the road after the crash,” Dattilo said. “The third vehicle was unable to stop and struck one of the two blocking cars.”

“The driver of the third vehicle was not impaired and not injured,” Dattilo added.

The crash remains under investigation.
