A young family got the shock of their lives last week when they found a man hiding in the closet of their home, according to Tumwater police.

About 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, police were dispatched to the 800 block of Israel Road Southwest.

Once there, police learned that a woman, 22, her boyfriend, 19, and an 18-month-old child had been at home for about 90 minutes. The boyfriend had noticed footprints leading to a hallway closet. He reached for the handle of the closet door and that’s when a man came running out and exited the home.

A K9 was used to track the man but he was not found, Police Lt. Jen Kolb said Tuesday.

The man is thought to be in his 30s. He was last seen wearing a black Carhart jacket and blue jeans, she said.

The woman, identified as Rebecca Blevins in an interview with King 5, believes they may have prevented a kidnapping.

Kolb said police don’t have evidence of that, but they are continuing to investigate.

“We don’t know the motivation of someone hiding in the closet,” she said. “We’re still trying to determine the who, what and why.”

Right now the man in the closet is facing possible criminal trespass or burglary charges, she said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Tumwater police at 360-754-4200.
