Thurston County to Offer Reconsideration of Legal Financial Obligations on Aug. 15

Posted

Legal Financial Obligation (LFO) Reconsideration Day will be held on Monday, Aug. 15, at the Thurston County Courthouse. The event, which will be hosted by the Thurston County Clerk’s Office, District Court, Public Defense, Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and Superior Court, is free.

Those seeking to participate must register, after which they will have attorneys review each individual case to determine eligibility. Eligible participants will then receive an appointment for the event at least one week before it is held.

During the appointment, individuals will have their LFOs reconsidered by the court.

A majority of people who come through the criminal court system in Thurston County are below the poverty line, and as a result, paying fees and fines because of a criminal conviction can cause further challenges and make reentry into the community more difficult, according to a news release from the county.

According to the announcement, “recent changes to Washington’s laws have created opportunities for cities and counties to address these challenges. Individuals previously convicted of one or more crimes in Thurston County may be eligible to have their legal financial fines or fees waived or reduced.”

Criminal fines and fees that are with the City of Olympia, rather than Thurston County, are not eligible.
