Tigers eke out two wins over Riverhawks

The Napavine baseball team came out on top in two close games against Toledo on Monday, as the Tigers topped the Riverhawks 4-1 and 3-2 in a C2BL doubleheader.

Ashton Demarest was lights out on the mound for the Tigers (3-1, 3-1 C2BL) in Game 1. After giving up a run on two hits in the first inning, he retired 18 of the final 19 batters he faced, with the only baserunner reaching on an error.

He went the full seven innings in the win, striking out seven and not issuing any walks.

A three-run second and an insurance run in the fifth was more than enough run support for Demarest.

Game 2 was even closer than the first, though it was Toledo that was on top for most of that contest.

The Riverhawks (0-5, 0-4 C2BL) took a 2-0 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly from Gavin Frewing and an error, and Frewing made sure that lead held into the seventh.

He went six innings on the bump, allowing just three hits and an unearned run in the third. With the Riverhawks up 2-1 heading into the seventh, he was in line for the win.

The Tigers were able to get two runners with a dropped third strike and a walk to start the bottom of the seventh, however, and Demarest ended the game with a walk-off, two-run single.

Napavine will host Toutle Lake on Friday before heading to Toutle on Saturday, while Toledo will host Rainier on Friday before heading north to take on the Mountaineers on Saturday.
