Tigers handle Timberwolves, remain unbeaten in C2BL play

NAPAVINE — It didn’t take long for the Napavine offense to get rolling on Friday night, as the Tigers scored nearly 30 points in the first quarter to kickstart a dominant 82-48 victory over Morton-White Pass.

The Tigers were able to find open shooters both on the perimeter and inside with ease throughout, finishing the game with a 50 percent mark from the floor and a 47.6 percent mark from deep.

The unit’s overall efficiency was reflected in the box score, where four different Tigers scored 10 or more points and six different Tigers combined for 22 assists.

“We continue to share the ball really well,” Napavine coach Eric Hersman said. “I think we have had three or four different guys who have led us in scoring on different nights. That seems to be what we’ve been doing well.”

It was Karsen Denault who led the scoring on Friday with 22 points, including a pair of dunks in the second half, and he also added nine rebounds, seven assists, and five steals.

Beckett Landram wasn’t far behind in the scoring department with 19 points, including four threes, and he added a pair of assists.

Tyler Watson had a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double, and Hudson Chambers just missed a double-double of his own with 14 points (including four threes of his own) and nine rebounds.

It’s Napavine’s (7-1) fourth straight win, and it moves the Tigers to 5-0 in C2BL play. They are just one of two C2BL teams left who are unbeaten in league play, sitting alongside Adna atop the league standings.”

“We’re playing hard,” Hersman said. “I think our defensive intensity kind of sets the tone … It’s fun to watch.”

Judah Kelly had another big night for the Timberwolves with 29 points, eight rebounds, two steals, and a pair of blocks.

Michael Biacan scored six points, Owen Loucks scored four, and Kohen Ingalsbe also tallied four while also hauling in seven rebounds.

“I’m looking for a little more discipline with my guys,” Morton-White Pass coach Kevin Dunlap said. “Everything should be done full speed. A lot of times we get in slumps where we go half speed … It’s a lot of little things that we just need to do better.”

MWP (3-6, 2-5 C2BL) will eventually get another crack at Napavine at the end of the month, as every C2BL boys team will play each other twice this season.

Hersman compared it to a three-game series in baseball, noting that multiple teams will also meet a third time at the district tournament in February.

“You hope to win the ones later on,” Hersman added.

Both the Timberwolves and Tigers have several games prior to that rematch, starting with matchups on Tuesday.

Morton-White Pass will head to Adna looking to snap a four-game losing streak.

“It’s another good team,” Dunlap said. “I think we are making gains. We just need to continue making strides in the right direction.”

Hersman echoed a similar sentiment when looking forward to Napavine’s matchup at home against Winlock.

“We’re just hoping to get better every day and keep playing hard,” Hersman said.
