Tigers lose at Harbor to end regular season

Grays Harbor proved to be an unwelcome setting for the Centralia volleyball team Thursday, which didn’t play its worst game but suffered a three-set sweep at the hands of Aberdeen, 25-13, 25-20, 27-25.

“This was probably the best game we’ve played with consistent, positive energy,” Centralia coach Marti Smith said. “They always stayed in it, and there were really some good things we were doing in the first set … but overall, Aberdeen was always ready to make the next play. There was always somebody in the right spot, whereas we kind of got out of position at a few times.”

The loss puts the Tigers (10-6, 7-5 2A EvCo) into the pigtail matchup of the 2A District 4 tournament; they’ll head to Longview on Tuesday to face Mark Morris.

Centralia led in both the second and third sets, going up 18-13 in the third, but Aberdeen took advantage of a few tough calls from the referee’s stand to come back.

Makayla Chavez had a team-high seven kills and four aces, while Lauren Wasson had six kills and 15 digs.

Mikaela Marazita had five kills, while McKenna Smith racked up four kills, nine digs and three blocks, and Payton Baumel had three blocks.

Gracie Schofield led the back row with 19 digs.

“The only disappointing part about tonight is the loss,” Marti Smith said. "I can’t be disappointed in their energy or how they came out. We just have to fix some technical things, and then we’ll be right there.”
