The Napavine football team set the tone for the season to come, and it sounded like the tune the state just about expected to hear, as the Tigers blew out Adna 59-6 at Pirate Stadium on Friday.
The Tigers (1-0) blitzed their way out in front early with 40 points in the first half to trigger the running clock as soon as the teams came back from halftime, and got it out to 59-0 before the Pirates (0-1) finally got on the board late in the fourth quarter.
Napavine got on the board in all three phases of the game, with Conner Holmes capping off the first quarter with a 26-yard interception return, and both Karsen Denault and Cal Bullock taking punts back to the house.
“I thought Conner Holmes had a really nice game,” Napavine coach Josh Fay said. “He's playing a new position, that can be pretty hard to do.”
Ashton Demarest finished with 155 passing yards and four touchdowns, after opening the scoring with a 36-yard yard touchdown scamper. Denault had 88 receiving yards on three catches, while James Grose caught two passes for 31 yards and a touchdown.
Lane Johnson was 6 for 19 for 20 passing yards, and scored Adna’s only touchdown of the day on a 57-yard run in the fourth quarter.
The win stretched Napavine’s regular season winning streak to 23 games, and gave the Tigers their sixth straight victory over Adna, but Fay still had plenty of critiques for his squad.
“We've got some film to watch and some corrections to make with our guys,” he said.
Napavine will try to make those corrections by next Friday, when it plays Onalaska. Adna, meanwhile, will face off against Pe Ell-Willapa Valley.
