Tigers ride quick start to win over Warriors

The Napavine softball team began its season with a win on Thursday, as the Tigers scored five in the second and held on to defeat Rochester 7-4.

The Warriors struck first with an RBI single from Leah Hartley in the first inning, but a combination of walks and errors helped the Tigers take a 5-1 lead in the second.

Layna Demers hit a two-run home run in the third to cut Rochester’s deficit in half, and Charlie Culp drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 5-4.

Hannah Fay didn’t allow another run in her final two innings in the circle, though, and Dakota Lyons pitched two shutout innings to end the afternoon.

Fay added some insurance in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run.

Errors ended up costing the Warriors throughout, as just two of the seven runs allowed were charged as earned. Arissa LeBaron pitched the first two innings, allowing just two hits and five unearned runs, and Hartley followed with four hitless innings where she struck out three.

Both teams will hit the road on Monday, as Napavine (1-0) will take on Onalaska in a C2BL matchup and Rochester (0-1) will head to Elma for its league opener.
