Timberland Regional Library, along with several other library networks in the state, want to bring families closer to nature — for free.
The libraries are now offering Check Out Washington Kits, which include binoculars, pamphlets and a Check Out Washington Discover Pass that will give them free access to state parks, campgrounds and trails, according to a Timberland news release.
The Western Washington library district received 30 kits that have been spread across its 29 library locations in five counties. They can be checked out for free by families for up to three weeks. You can place a hold online for a kit, and when it’s available, you can pick it up at your library.
Timberland Regional Library has locations in Thurston, Grays Harbor, Lewis, Mason and Pacific counties.
TRL is one of 10 library districts in the state to offer the new Check Out Washington kits. The kits were distributed most to “communities where health disparity data shows a higher need for free access to recreation opportunities,” according to the news release.
The program is being made possible through a partnership between the Washington State Parks, Washington State Parks Foundation, WSECU, Washington State Library and the Office of the Washington Secretary of State.
The Discover Pass provides free parking and can be used for a week, and along with the binoculars the pack also comes with educational materials and pocket guides on trees, wildlife and birds. A regular one-day Discover Pass can still be purchased online for $10.
