Timberwolves hang on to defeat Beavers after surrendering big first-half lead

It was a tale of two halves in Morton Tuesday night as Morton-White Pass gave up a 17-point halftime lead to beat Tenino 41-37.

MWP led 30-13 at halftime but fell flat in the third quarter, with the Beavers outscoring the Timberwolves 14-4 to pull within seven points. Tenino was down three points in the fourth quarter but ultimately couldn’t complete the comeback.

With the victory, the T-Wolves are 5-0 for the first time in 11 years. Even after the win, head coach Tim McCoy knows his group has work to do.

“We went ice cold and fell apart,” he said of the second half. “Got to give it to Tenino. Those kids never gave up. In the second half, we kept turning the ball over. They held it together.”

Malia Armstrong, the lone senior on the roster, led all scorers with 19 points, while Ryelin Wiedenmann tallied 13 points. McCoy praised eighth grader Caydence Franz, who scored four points, for being a “spark plug.”

For Tenino, head coach Kirsi Gofinch is proud of the fight her young team showed on the road despite facing a big margin at halftime. She credited the lone senior Chloe Grayless for her leadership.

“There’s a certain level of intensity that Chloe brings that is valuable,” Gofinch said. “We did a good job of making adjustments on the fly. Part of the message at half was that we have to know where the shooters are, and we did a better job not giving up open looks in the second half.”

Charley Jones paced the Beavers with 15 points, and Kylie Gonia scored 11. Georgia Gore added seven points.

MWP will face Willapa Valley Wednesday night and then will host Toledo Friday in Morton and Mossyrock Saturday in White Pass.

Tenino (1-5) will finally return home after a three-game road stint with a home bout with Mary M. Knight Thursday night.
