A late Morton-White Pass rally against Rainier fell just short on Thursday, as the Mountaineers topped the Timberwolves 6-5.
Rainier (1-0 1-0 C2BL) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth and doubled their advantage in the fifth, and even though MWP was able to get on the board in the bottom of the fifth, they led 6-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
That’s where the T-Wolves (0-1, 0-1 C2BL) got going offensively, scoring four runs to get within one. That was as close as they would get, however, as they couldn’t scratch across the tying run.
“I thought we battled hard,” Morton-White Pass coach Lee Metcalf said. “For them to come out and get a close game under their belts and battle was impressive.”
A big reason the Timberwolves’ offense stalled throughout most of the game was because they struck out 16 times, something Metcalf said they must correct.
Keaton Thomspon pitched two shutout innings on the bump and went 2 for 4 at the plate, and Brecken Pelletier pitched an inning and a third, hit two doubles, and drove in three runs.
The Mountaineers and T-Wolves will face off again on Friday at Rainier.
