Toledo avoids upset versus Onalaska, gets clocked by Ilwaco

LONG BEACH — The Toledo High School baseball team’s fate of going far in the Class 2B District 4 tournament was beginning to fade.

The C2BL’s No. 3 seeded offense finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth with seven runs to complete a stunning rally against No. 8 Onalaska 10-7 in a first round game at Tinker Field.

“We just had confidence the game wasn’t dead until we woke up,” Riverhawks junior Nico Acosta said.

Toledo (13-8) opened the inning with a walk and back-to-back singles before consecutive RBI hits suddenly cut the deficit to 7-5.

Moments later, Acosta ripped a bases-clearing double down the left field line and advanced to third on a throwing error to erase the deficit and retake control of the game. Toledo’s dugout erupted after the hit, while the crowd along the third base line came to life as the Riverhawks suddenly seized control again.

“I knew if it started inside, the pitch was probably going to end up in the middle,” Acosta said. “I just turned on it.”

“You put up a crooked number late in the game and anything can happen,” Riverhawks head coach Mack Gaul added.

The Riverhawks jumped out early, using walks and timely hitting to manufacture the game’s first run before adding to the lead later in the game.

Onalaska (3-19) didn’t let things spiral.

After falling behind early, the Loggers answered with their biggest swing of the afternoon when Rowdy Lyons delivered a triple that turned into an inside-the-park home run following an outfield error.

They continued to chip away through the middle innings, scoring once in the fifth before sending four runs across in the sixth to take a 7-3 lead.

“The whole message was battle with these guys,” Onalaska head coach Weylin Womack said. “I felt like we did that pretty well today. We started getting disciplined at the plate, getting deep into counts and putting the ball in play.”

Nico Acosta drove in three runs, while Rohan Feigenbaum collected two hits and Brody Lawrence added a pair of hits and an RBI for Toledo. For Onalaska, Lyons tallied two hits and two RBIs, while Maddox McKinley added two hits and two RBIs.

The Loggers have just one senior on the roster in Jaxon Dhone. Everyone else is expected back for the 2027 season.

Toledo couldn’t maintain the first round momentum against the reigning district champs of Ilwaco, dropping an 11-1 quarterfinal to the P2BL regular season champs. The Fishermen erupted for three runs each in the first and second innings, then added four in the fourth.

Masson Ruiz had the lone RBI for the Riverhawks in the top of the second, a sacrifice fly that plated Nico Acosta. Five different hitters registered a hit while Feigenbaum and Nico Acosta each stole a base.

Toledo will take on Forks in an elimination game on Tuesday afternoon in Adna.
