Ignited by 200-plus yards on the ground from star Nico Acosta and three straight touchdowns in the opening frame, the Riverhawks picked up a 41-20 verdict over the Tigers on Friday night to extend their home winning streak.
Acosta was bottled up last week against Adna, but let it rip in Week 2. He had rushing touchdowns of 11-yards, 61-yards and 1-yard en route to a 217-yard day. Riverhawks head coach Mike Christensen could sense his senior’s attitude this week.
“He was frustrated after the Adna game,” Christensen said. “He is not perfect, but he is a hard worker and I’ve got all the confidence (in him). It was a big step forward for us.”
Joaquin Acosta opened the scoring with a 23-yard dash to the end zone and then in the second, found tight end Brady Weeks for a 20-yard score for the Riverhawks (1-1). The sophomore QB finished with over 100 total yards of offense in the win.
“We saw what we needed to fix and it was pretty clear on film,” Christensen said. “We executed really well offensively and I think I’ll like what I see.”
Toledo will take on another 1A opponent at home, welcoming in Tenino next week.
