Toledo Senior Jennifer Martin Wins DAR’s Good Citizen Scholarship

Mary Lacy Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, has announced that Jennifer Susanne Martin, Toledo High School’s Class of 2013, has won its $500 DAR Good Citizen Scholarship.

The contest, open only to high school seniors who have been chosen by their schools to be recognized as DAR Good Citizens, is never judged by DAR members and only one winner can be chosen by any chapter.

The judges’ decision is based 70 percent on the contestant’s letters of reference, school activities, service to community, grade transcript, responses and future plans. An essay, written in the presence of a faculty member within two hours, using no reference materials, counts 30 percent.

Martin, who plans to become a science teacher, wrote: “Teaching science will open many doors for me to interact with children, parents and the outdoor world. Through teaching, I hope to invest in and bring hope to children who otherwise might feel insignificant and small. I wish to teach in an underserved area for a few years, or until my soul says otherwise; preferably in a Hispanic community or reservation.”

Despite having to repeat much of her junior year because of a serious illness and expending countless hours of volunteer service in her community, Martin has earned a grade point average of 3.9. Her essay package has been forwarded to the WSSDAR Good Citizen chairman for judging at the state level.
