A rail car carrying garbage caught fire as a train was making its way through Kelso Tuesday night, Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue said.
Firefighters arrived at the tracks along the Cowlitz River near Talley Way and Coweeman Park Drive around midnight to find smoke leaking from the rail car.
They had to cut into the sealed car to douse the smoldering garbage, putting it out by about 2 in the morning. Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue said the fire’s cause has not been determined.
No injuries were reported, officials said.
Union Pacific told firefighters the train “was hauling garbage from the Seattle area to Arlington, Oregon, for disposal.”
