Trojans can’t overcome slow start against Wildcats

A slow start out of the gate put Pe Ell down early against Crosspoint Christian on Saturday, and the Trojans never recovered in a 62-42 loss.

Defensively, the Trojans came out of the gate slow, and the Wildcats were able to get several open shots in the first quarter. The Pe Ell offense didn’t do much better, and as a result, Pe Ell went into the second down 17-4.

The Trojans started to piece things together late in the second, but were outscored 21-9 in the third.

“We can’t take a quarter or two to get going,” Pe Ell coach Kelsey Lennox said. “If we want to compete with these tougher teams and win ball games, we just can’t do that.”

Karli Phelps was held scoreless in the first, but she settled in and went on to finish with 21 points, including four threes, six rebounds, three steals, two blocks, and an assist.

Maisy King added eight points, 14 rebounds, and five assists, and Lennox commended her for “working her tail off” as Pe Ell’s sole post presence after Peyton Zock left the game.

The Trojans (1-2) will look to get back in the win column on Monday at Onalaska.
