All the top-seeded Thunderbirds needed was 20 seconds to find the back of the net and the defense did the rest, securing a 1-0 triumph over upset-minded Hudson’s Bay on Saturday afternoon at Tumwater District Stadium in a Class 2A District 4 quarterfinal.
Outside of the two years of no postseason due to COVID-19, Tumwater (11-6) has made the district semis every year since 2019. It will face its Evergreen Conference rival W.F. West on Tuesday at home.
The winner is guaranteed a return trip to the state tournament.
“It is the goal they set and they wanted. They’re looking to go get it,” Thunderbirds head coach John Hayes said.
Tumwater stole the opening kick and a Gavin Cuoio cross found the foot of sophomore midfielder Lucas Oltion for the opening minute goal. Hudson’s Bay had a couple opportunities in the second half, but Davyn McGilvrey turned them aside.
Tumwater had some chances too, but the one goal ended up sticking. It has posted six clean sheets this season.
“It is a group of guys getting a year older,” Hayes said of his back line. “A few of those kids that started and played every game as freshman, gave them the feel of playing high school soccer.”
First kick between the T-Birds and Bearcats is slated for 6 p.m.
