At least one person was shot while exchanging gunfire" in an apparent road rage incident Wednesday morning on Interstate 5 near downtown Seattle, according to police.

State troopers were investigating whether a second gunshot victim was connected to the freeway shooting.

An orange Subaru was headed north a little before noon when a driver in a blue van started tailgating the car, State Patrol Trooper Rick Johnson said Tuesday. The van then pulled up, and an occupant shot at the Subaru driver. Johnson said the shooting was likely fueled by road rage. Patrol said Wednesday the second vehicle is believed to be a dark blue Oldsmobile minivan.

Patrol asked anyone who witnessed the incident or what occurred before it to contact a detective at Judah.Bergeron@wsp.wa.gov.

The Subaru driver later told police he also fired several shots at the van near the West Seattle Bridge, according to a Seattle police incident report. Johnson couldn't confirm this.

The Subaru driver, who was shot in the back, took the exit to Denny Way and stopped near Fairview Avenue North, according to police.

Police seized the Subaru, which had a large bullet hole in a back passenger window. Johnson said the shooting occurred during high traffic and urged those who witnessed it to come forward.

Johnson said anyone with information should call 911.

"There's got to be other people who saw something, he said.

Police closed Denny Way as they investigated.
