Up to 5,000 gallons of diesel spills from Navy ship into Elliott Bay

A fuel spill on Harbor Island allowed as much as 5,000 gallons of diesel into a containment area in Elliott Bay, according to the state Department of Ecology.

A social media post Monday night by the agency stated a recovery operation began soon after the spill at Vigor Shipyards, in coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy and others.

Fuel was being removed from the naval vessel USS Sampson when a hose failure led to a discharge of an estimated 2500 to 5000 gallons of diesel to Elliott Bay, spilling into a pre-boomed area around the vessel, according to the post.

The USS Sampson is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer that was commissioned in 2007, with a current home port in Everett. On deployments, the ships carry more than 300 sailors.
