Egg Days Gets Underway With Car Show, Coronation

The 78th annual Winlock Egg Days gets underway Friday in the Cowlitz Basin community.

It all starts with the first Import Tuner Car Show, which will run 5-9 p.m. at the Winlock Miller Elementary School athletic field, 405 NW Benton Ave. Vendors will be on site.

Also on Friday is the coronation of the Egg Day Queen, which will be at 7 p.m. at Winlock Middle School, 241 N. Military Road. 

Part of the event is the second annual Cake Decorating Contest. Those planning to attend are asked to support the Winlock-Vader Food Bank by bringing non-perishable food items or monetary donations for the chance to win one of many door prizes.

On Saturday, $5 breakfasts fit for an egg farmer will be served 7-10 a.m. both by the American Legion at the Winlock Community Building and at the Olequa Senior Center, 119 SW Kerron St. 

Those in attendance can visit the 11th annual Winlock Lions Egg Day Pre-’79 Car Show at the Kerron Street Plaza.

The Timberland Library Used Book Sale will be 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at its storage room next to the post office parking lot. There will be a wide variety of books, videos and sound recordings for sale.

New exhibits will be open to the public at the Winlock Museum, housed in the old firehouse built 100 years ago. The exhibits will be open 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

At the 11 a.m. parade, Jeff and Cheryl Millman, of Cattermole Funeral Home, will serve as grand marshals.

Following the parade, free egg sandwiches will be available. There are will be a community carnival, flea market and plenty of vendors.

A magic show by Jeff Evans will start at 1 p.m. at the Community Building. Next door, the fire station will be hosting its Public Safety Fair. 

An Old Fashioned Cake Walk will be at 2 p.m. in the high school gymnasium.

The day closes with a street dance starting at 9 p.m.

Arts of the Mountain Coming to Spirit Lake Highway

The U.S. Forest Service and Mount St Helens Institute are hosting the third annual Arts of the Mountain event at the Science and Learning Center at Coldwater Saturday and Sunday.

 Paintings, sculptures, jewelry, woodworking and stained glass from 25 local artists, as well as music and food, will be offered at each of five different venues along the Spirit Lake Highway (state Route 504).

Locations are Silver Lake Grange (milepost 5), Mount St. Helens RV Park (MP 8), Twosome Art Gallery (MP 15), Hoffstadt Bluffs Visitor Center (MP 27) and the Science and Learning Center at Coldwater (MP 43). 

 At the Science and Learning Center, Bottles and Botegas of Portland will also offer painting instruction. Visitors can leave with a piece of art they created at Mount St. Helens. Details are at https://www.facebook.com/artsofthemountain,

The first of three Music on the Mountain concerts this summer will be 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at the Johnston Ridge Observatory Amphitheater. It is sponsored by the U.S. Forest Service, Cowlitz Economic Development Council, Mount St. Helens Institute and Kelso Rotary Club.

The US Forest Service and Columbian newspaper will be presenting a new display of Reid Blackburn’s photos and 

1980 story at the Science and Learning Center throughout the summer season. Blackburn, a photographer for the Columbian, was killed during the Mount St. Helens explosion on May 18, 1980.

 

Kiddy Cat Palooza Will be at Fox Theatre

Kiddy Cat Palooza, sponsored by The Cat’s Meow Spay, Neuter and Adoption Project, is coming to the Fox Theatre in downtown Centralia Saturday.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A prize will be given to the child dressed in the best cat costume. The day’s events include a random chance drawing, 50/50 drawing, face painting, balloon animals, marshmallow shooters and contest.

Maria Soriano Reilly, a speaker from The Feral Cat Spay/Neuter Project, will share their story of success and continued efforts to humanely address the feral cat population and how they will work with us to ensure success locally. 

The grand finale will be a performance by magician Rick Anderson and excerpts from the Broadway production “Cats” presented by Southwest Washington Dance Center students.

Presale tickets are available at Shop’n Kart stores and Holley’s Place, located next to the theater. Admission is $6 for those 12 years and younger, $8 for those 13 years and older. Day of event tickets will be $8 for those 12 years and younger, $10 for those 13 years and older.

Proceeds will go toward Cat’s Meow operational expenses.

Fairgrounds to Host Billetproof Car Show

The Billetproof Hot Rod and Custom Show, the Northwest’s largest series of traditional hot rod and custom show events, comes to the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds Saturday.

 Hundreds of hot rods and customs, live bands, vendors and a pin-up contest will be at the fairgrounds 8 a.m.-4 p.m. There will be a free model car “make and take” for children 12 and under. 

Spectator entry is $10. Children under 12, police, fire and active military are free with proper ID. 

The show moves to the streets of downtown Centralia on Saturday night for a cruise 7-10 p.m.

Billetproof is about pre-1964 hot rods and customs. No high tech, billet wheel, digital dashed techno rods or street rods are allowed.

Tenino Farmers Market to Hold Grand Opening

The Tenino Farmers Market will commemorate its 10th season on Saturday with a grand opening celebration.

Vendors will offer shoppers an array of sights, sounds and smells. The market will host dozens of booths offering fresh-picked produce, USDA beef, chicken and pork, crafts, plants, baskets, planters, fresh-cut flowers, fresh-baked breads and pastries, handmade goat milk soap and lotion, wood crafts, quality handmade crafts and jewelry.

Festivities during the day will include a recognition program at 11 a.m. to thank sponsors, volunteers and 10-year veteran vendors. Following the program, sponsor representatives will serve carrot cake. Soggy Bottom Ranch will be on hand with pony rides, the T90 Firefighters Association will provide bicycle safety training and helmets for children, and farmers/growers/producers will be ready for “Meet Your Farmer” chats.

Look for the “special carrot” at the market as part of the Chamber of Commerce’s Shop Hop Scavenger Hunt. When you find it, come to the market booth, get your entry sheet validated, and see if your grab bag carrot has won a prize.

The Tenino Farmers Market takes place 10 a.m.-3 p.m. every Saturday June-September at the Tenino Elementary School, on the corner of Garfield Avenue and Highway 99. WIC and the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition checks are accepted.

‘Hams’ to Give Demonstration of Amateur Radio

In connection with Amateur Radio Week, the Chehalis Valley Amateur Radio Society, Lewis County Amateur Radio Emergency Services team and the Centralia Amateur Radio Emergency Services team will be demonstrating amateur radio at Centralia’s Fort Borst Park Saturday and Sunday.

This “Field Day” is the climax of Amateur Radio Week. Using only emergency power supplies, ham operators will construct emergency stations in parks, shopping malls, schools and backyards around the country. More than 35,000 amateur radio operators across the country participated in last year’s event.

The demonstration at Fort Borst Park will be open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and 7-11 a.m. Sunday.
