Arbor Day Cleanup Planned for Fort Borst Arboretum
The fifth annual Arbor Day Celebration will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Fort Borst Park Arboretum, Centralia.
Volunteers will be invited to help plant trees in Fort Borst Park or remove litter and brush from alongside the park’s trails and rhododendron gardens.
Participants are asked to meet at the Fort Borst Park one-room schoolhouse at 9 a.m.
Chehalis Event Will Feature Civil War’s Battle of Shiloh
The next Civil War event at the Veterans Memorial Museum will be held Saturday.
Focus of this presentation will be the Battle of Shiloh, but there also will be a presentation on the Battle of the Iron Clads. An authentic Civil War lunch will be offered for $10.
The museum is located at 100 S.W. Veterans Way, west of Interstate 5 off Southwest Newaukum Avenue.
Roxy to Host Improv Theater Workshop
Rebecca Rogers, a longtime professional improvisational performer and teacher, will be offering an intensive improv theater workshop Saturday and Sunday at Morton’s Roxy Theater.
Participants will learn the fundamentals of improv and then advance to its subtleties, applying new skills through warmups, exercises, games and a culminating performance on Sunday evening.
The Saturday session will be noon to 6:30 p.m. On Sunday, it will be 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Workshop cost is $100, which includes lunches. Registration is available online at www.firemac.org. The deadline for discounted registration ($60) is Friday, April 6.
Admission for the 5 p.m. Sunday performance is $7.

Stowell to Give Clinic, Concert at Matrix
John Stowell, a Portland-based international guitarist, clinician, composer and recording artist, will teach an improvisation clinic for all melodic instruments followed by a concert at the Matrix Coffeehouse, Chehalis.
Stowell began his career in the early 1970s and continues to tour, record and perform extensively both as a solo act and with numerous well-known jazz luminaries.
Among his numerous career credits, in 1983, Stowell joined bassist David Friesen, flutist Paul Horn and Paul’s son Robin Horn (on drums) for a historic tour of the Soviet Union. This was the first time in 40 years that an American jazz group had been invited to play public performances in Russia.
The clinic will be from 2 to 5 p.m., and the concert at 7 p.m. Tickets are $35 for the clinic, $12 for the concert or $42 for both.

Centralia Grad to Sign New Book
Author S. Scott Twigg, a 1985 Centralia High School graduate, will be signing his first book this weekend at two locations in the Twin Cities.
Twigg will be signing “Jeremiah Stone” at 11-1 Saturday at Book ‘n’ Brush and 11-1 Sunday at Santa Lucia Coffee. Book‘ n’ Brush is located at 518 N. Market Blvd., Chehalis. Santa Lucia is at 202 S. Tower Ave., Centralia
The book is the first of three in a series. His second book will take place in Centralia.
The story surrounding Jeremiah Stone takes the theme from the Bible’s Book of Job and places it in a world where angels and demons exist alongside mortals. The series follows the choices a man makes in life if he were given a single gift from both God and the Devil.

Chehalin, 14, to Perform at PLU Concert
Matthew Durham, 14, is going to be joining forces with the Pacific Lutheran Harp Ensemble and other instrumentalists Sunday to provide an hour of music.
The Chehalis resident will be playing on the Lagerquist Organ at PLU, known to be the largest organ on the West Coast. He will be accompanying one of the harpists on a well-known spiritual, “Simple Gifts.”
The concert is at 5:30 p.m. in the Mary Baker Russell Music Building on the PLU campus, Parkland.

Identical Twins to Perform at Olympic Club
Identical twins Laurie and Katelyn Shook, performing as the Shook Twins, will be at the Olympic Club in downtown Centralia Tuesday, April 17, at 7 p.m.
Joining them is Kyle Volkman on bass.
The Shooks combine vocals, banjo, percussion and beatboxing for a blend of folk, roots and pop music.

Forum on Social Justice Set for Centralia College
A panel of individuals representing ethnic minorities, tribal members, religious diversity, those of different genders and sexual orientations, and those who struggle with ableism and disabilities will be speaking at a community forum at Centralia College Wednesday.
The event will begin with refreshments at 6:30 p.m. in Washington Hall 103. The program starts at 7 p.m.
The forum is sponsored by the college’s Diversity Committee, Latinos Unidos and the Gay Straight Alliance.
