The Lewis County Board of Commissioners celebrated Veterans Day early this year, taking a moment to recognize county employees who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The board of commissioners kicked off its Tuesday business meeting with a few words from Lewis County Veteran Service Advisory Board member and Veteran Services Officer George Dodd, followed by a slideshow recognizing more than 40 individual local veterans for their service in the many branches of the U.S. military.

During his time, Dodd first extended a special thanks to individuals in the community who work to help local veterans, including employees of the Veterans Memorial Museum in Chehalis and Lewis County Public Health and Social Services Director Meja Handlen.

“As a veteran, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all those that dedicate their time, energy and compassion to supporting veterans throughout this community,” Dodd said. “Especially those at the veterans museum: Chip Duncan, Breonna Smith and the entire staff at the museum for the continued commitment to supporting veterans and their families navigating the often complex process of applying for VA benefits.”

After the presentation, Lewis County Commissioner Scott Brummer, chair of the board, invited veterans in the room to come to the front of the room and take a photo with the three members of the board of commissioners.

“A tremendous amount of folks that are serving here in Lewis County,” Brummer said. “We appreciate your service to our country and to our county and citizens.”
