The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) issued a public warning Thursday after receiving a report that a victim had lost $750 to a caller posing as a captain from the sheriff’s department.

According to the department, the caller said they were “Captain Andrew McCoy” and claimed fees for “a daughter’s ankle monitor.”

“Criminals can be very creative and persuasive with their reason for calling. They may even use names of actual LCSO employees,” the department said in a news release.

The department added that law enforcement would never demand payment over the phone, “especially using pressure or urgent threats.”

“Hang up, don’t share personal information, and please report suspicious calls!” the department stated.
