Vikings down Tigers in four for third consecutive league win

The Mossyrock volleyball team lost its league opener last week, but the Vikings have bounced back nicely with three straight wins.

Their latest victory came at home against Napavine on Wednesday, as they took down the Tigers 25-21, 25-20, 26-28, 25-20.

Adyson Barrows and Renzy Marshall led the way combining for 33 kills, and the duo also combined for 43 digs defensively.

Taylor Schwartz led the way defensively with 43 digs, while Erin Cournyer tallied 52 assists, 16 digs, six kills, and four aces. Saydi Mendoza and Kendall Cournyer both had two blocks at the net.

Though the Tigers came out on the wrong end, Napavine coach Monica Dailey was pleased with what see saw.

“It seemed like we jumped out in the first three sets,” Dailey said. “We didn’t lose focus, but we let up a little bit and you can’t do that with a team like Mossyrock. You have to keep pushing.”

For the first time in “a few years,” the Tigers didn’t miss a single serve.

“One hundred percent as a team,” Dailey said.

There were times where the serve receive wasn’t as consistent, as they gave up nine aces, but Dailey was still proud of the way they continued to chip away.

“My girls showed a lot of gumption tonight,” Dailey said. “It was the most focused they’ve been all season, consistently .. They’re going to be hard teams to play, but it is nice to see them play well against Mossyrock. It does give them that confidence, just have to have a little bit extra to beat them.”

Jessie McCoy finished with 20 assists, 16 kills, and three blocks, while Emily Kang logged 36 digs. Lilly Blair added 11 assists, while Kennedy Purvis tallied 11 kills and Nicholle Valentine had 10. Lilly Grabianowski also made several plays defensively, finishing with 23 digs.

Both teams will be back in action on Tuesday, as Mossyrock (7-4, 3-1 C2BL) will head to Onalaska and Napavine (6-6, 2-2 C2BL) will return home to host Morton-White Pass.
