Through the first half of Central 2B League play, the Mossyrock High School volleyball team is still unscathed. The Vikings secured their fourth straight win to open league play with a victory over Napavine in four sets 21-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-22 in Napavine Thursday night.
After falling in a tight first set to the Tigers, the Vikings responded in the three ensuing sets. Napavine’s strong service tested Mossyrock, as the Tigers recorded 16 aces on the night, but the trio of Kendall Cournyer, Calliope Schultz and Leah Contreras was too much for Napavine to handle.
Cournyer recorded 13 kills and 14 digs, while Schultz logged 20 assists. Contreras’ stat line of six kills, one ace and one block isn’t eye-popping, but her impact was felt.
“Leah Contreras plays consistently night after night, with very few errors and great percentages in hitting and serving,” Mossyrock head coach Alex Nelson said. “She also had a great night on defense.”
Additionally for Mossyrock, Taylor Schwartz recorded 31 digs, and Adyson Barrows put up eight kills, six aces and 29 digs.
Napavine was led by Kennedy Purvis, who tallied nine kills, eight aces and 18 digs. Makayla Brett provided 23 assists and three aces, and Ava Ondong recorded 10 kills. Tigers head coach Monica Dailey was impressed with how her team fared against one of the top teams in the state.
“Every single one of them played really well tonight. Some of them don’t have a lot in the stats column, but they contributed so much tonight in other ways,” she said. “They were really loud in their communication. I feel like we made a big step forward in our progress, and I’m excited to see how the rest of the season goes.”
The schedule grows tougher for both teams to finish the regular season. Mossyrock (8-4, 4-0 C2BL) will host Onalaska (7-3, 4-0 C2BL) in a battle of league undefeated teams on Oct. 21 before visiting Rainier two nights later. Napavine (2-10, 1-3 C2BL) will travel to Morton-White Pass (9-4, 2-2 C2BL) on Oct. 21 followed by a home matchup with Adna (2-9, 0-4 C2BL) on Oct. 23.
