Playing its first game since Jan. 4, the Mossyrock girls basketball team returned with a bang, as the Vikings ran away with a 64-19 win over Tenino on Wednesday.

The Vikings (8-6, 4-0 1B Columbia Valley) came out of the gate strong, holding the Beavers (2-15, 0-4 1A Evergreen) to just two points in the first quarter and seven in the second.

Offensively, they connected from the field early and often, scoring 27 points in the first half to take a 20-point lead into the locker room. It only got better in the second half, as they outscored Tenino 37-10.

“This is the momentum we need to keep going leading into the second half of the season,” Mossyrock coach Autumn Moorcroft said.

Kendall Cournyer was efficient from the field, hitting six of her eight shots, including three 3-pointers, for a game-high 15 points. Abbie Lovan hit twice from long-range and scored eight, while Delaney Marshall scored seven while also leading the team with five rebounds and four assists.

Four Vikings scored six, including Taylor Schwartz, who also came away with five steals.

Ten of the 11 Vikings who saw the floor scored, and as a team, Mossyrock shot 43 percent from the floor.

“Everyone stepped up and played hard,” Moorcroft said. “We played four quarters of good basketball.”

Holly Thoren led the way for the Beavers with six points and Brianna Asay added five.

Both teams will return to league play on Friday, as the Vikings will host second-place Naselle, while the Beavers will host league-leading Montesano.
