Wakeboarder identified after fatal incident on Columbia River

Authorities say a Salem man, Joseph Sheean, was the wakeboarder who died Aug. 4 in a boating accident on the Columbia River near Government Island.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said Sheean was wakeboarding behind a boat when his tow rope wrapped around the propeller. He was pulled under the boat and sustained a traumatic head injury.

It took five minutes for Sheean’s companions to rescue him from under their boat. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. The medical examiner listed his cause of death as a head injury caused by the boat propeller.
