After leading most of the night and in prime position for a league win, the Rochester High School boys basketball team were on the wrong end of a comeback, losing to Hoquiam 51-50 on Friday night at home.
Lincoln Niemi gave Hoquiam the lead by splitting two free throws with 13.1 seconds left. The ball went out of bounds at 2.8 and Rochester had a last chance for a game-winner. It was off and the Warriors left in disbelief.
“Ran out of gas at the end,” their head coach Caleb Sells said. “We made some very untimely turnovers.”
Down to just seven available players, the Warriors (1-14, 0-4 Evergreen) played inspired basketball in the first quarter. Their press led to buckets at the rim to take a five-point lead. Lane Morgan led them with 14 points while LeShawn Hines chipped in 10.
Rochester will begin the second half of the league season on Tuesday when it takes on Elma.
“Every team is tough; no gimmes in this league,” Sells said.
