Warriors fall to Grizzlies, sets up winner-to-districts showdown

Even with two wins on the season and going through a rebuilding year, the Rochester High School girls basketball team is four quarters from guaranteeing at least two more games this winter.

A 60-30 setback to Hoquiam at home on Wednesday night solidified a third meeting with arch rival Tenino for the fourth and final spot in the Class 1A District 4 tournament set for Friday at 6 p.m. in Elma.

The two sides split the regular season meetings. Rochester won the second contest 44-41 a week ago.

“It is a fun position to be in,” Warriors head coach Keeli Rivas said. “It is going to come down to who stays calm, cool and collected. It is do or die time.”

Rochester (2-18, 1-7 Evergreen) erased a first half double digit deficit to trail by four in the second quarter and only left the court down nine.

It lost a free throw battle in the third and was never able to fully recover. Its offense was limited to three made field goals in the final two frames.

“We kind of shot ourselves in the foot,” Rivas admitted.

Lizzie Hoover led the Warriors with 12 points while three others notched at least four points.
