Against one of its closest rivals and former league foe, the Rochester High School boys basketball team picked up win No. 1 on the season with a 58-47 triumph over the Tigers on Monday night.
It snapped a 12-game skid to start the season and give first-year head coach Caleb Sells his first coaching victory for the Warriors.
“Can’t describe how good it feels to get one,” Sells said. “Boys are pretty excited. We want to play full court, press the whole game. It allows us to be more aggressive in the things we want to do.”
Sells has been seeing growth from a youthful Rochester (1-12) group. One aspect was the Warriors shot 36 percent from the field, an increase from 18 percent against Montesano. Brayden O’Connor and Colton Weiss each led them with 13 points.
Le’Shawn Hines chipped in 10.
“They’re the right shots by the right kid,” Sells said. “They’re starting to look more comfortable. I feel like any given night, we can play with anybody in our league.”
Centralia (2-10) was led by 12 points each from Johntah Pirtle and Kadin Young. It cut a 13-point halftime deficit to eight entering the final quarter.
