Washington's Department of Natural Resources launched its recently launched its automated prescribed fire notification service to keep people informed about burns near them or anywhere in the state.
That includes a burn on 796 acres of state trust lands about 11 miles west of Ellensburg, which could occur this week to reduce the risk of high-severity wildfire in the area and accelerate natural regeneration on the landscape while reducing the threat of insect and disease outbreaks. DNR's new app, which can be accessed by signing up via the DNR Burn Portal, allows users to find prescribed fires managed by any entity, not just DNR.
Emails and text messages will be sent out to users featuring information such as how far a planned burn is from a location, when the burn is planned and the size of the burn. For more information about DNR's Prescribed Fire Program and to watch a short video explaining how to sign up for notifications, go to dnr.wa.gov/prescribedfire.
