Washington firefighters save cat and owner in tree after several hours battling brush fire

WENATCHEE — After several hours spent fighting a brush fire Sunday, the Wenatchee Valley Fire Department on Monday faced its most meow-ntainous task yet: rescuing a cat and its owner from a tree.

The fire department received a call for a woman and cat stuck on a tree at Memorial Park in Wenatchee, according to Chief Brian Brett.

The woman became stuck after attempting to retrieve her cat from a tree. Though a classic trope, rescuing pets isn't a normal call for firefighters.

"Retrieving cats from trees is not in our purview," Brett said. "This was an extenuating situation."

He added people should reach out to the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society if their pets become stuck instead of retrieving them themselves.

"Both the owner of the cat and the cat were very happy to be back on the ground," Brett said.
