A 34-year-old Washington man who traveled to Oregon to sexually abuse a teenage girl was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison.

Seth Lee Fabry met the girl online and made two trips to Oregon to have sex with the teenager, including at her Eugene home while her mother was away. He was arrested on his third trip that the girl’s mother set up after learning of the abuse and assuming her daughter’s profile on social media, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Sweet.

“Seth Fabry brought to reality every parent’s nightmare — that an adult will engage in a secret relationship with their child, exposing them to sexually explicit material and subjecting them to sexual conduct,” Sweet wrote in a sentencing memo.

Fabry and the girl began communicating on the social media platform MeetMe when Fabry was 32 and the girl was 16, though she listed her age as 21, according to court records. They switched their conversation to a different online platform, Discord, in April 2022. At one point, the teen stopped messaging Fabry, but he pursued her from another account, asking if she had unfollowed him because he had Asperger’s syndrome, Sweet wrote.

On April 14, 2022, the teen messaged Fabry that she stopped following him because she was actually 16 years old. But Fabry then asked her to send him photos of her to prove her age and traveled to Oregon to meet with the girl for sex, according to the prosecutor.

After the teenager revealed to her mother what was happening, the girl’s mother got Fabry to travel to Oregon a third time but was waiting for him with friends when he arrived and called police, according to Sweet.

Fabry was arrested on May 26, 2022. He pleaded guilty to coercion and enticement of a minor.

Sweet sought a 15 year and eight month sentence; Fabry’s lawyer, Assistant Federal Public Defender Kimberly-Claire E. Seymour asked for a 10-year prison term.

U.S. District Judge Michael J. McShane sentenced Fabry on Tuesday. The FBI, along with Eugene police, investigated the case.
