A Moxee man charged with killing his infant son has had his paramedic's license suspended.

In an Aug. 5 order, the state Department of Health suspended Jon Paul Gaffney's license, alleging that he engaged in unprofessional conduct, according to an order issued by the health department.

The allegation was based on the homicide-by-abuse — domestic violence charge Gaffney is facing in Yakima County Superior Court. Gaffney, 36, was charged in March in connection with the death of his 3-month-old son, Logan, according to court documents.

The suspension will remain in place pending the resolution of Gaffney's criminal case. He is currently out of custody after posting $50,000 bail.

Moxee police, emergency medical technicians and paramedics went to a home in the 100 block of Riel Lane around 7:20 p.m. March 11 for a child having difficulty breathing. The boy, Logan Gaffney, was taken to MultiCare Yakima Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 9:10 p.m., according to a probable cause affidavit.

Gaffney had been home alone with his son for 12 hours, the affidavit said.

An autopsy initially determined Logan died from bleeding on his brain, but further examination found bleeding inside his eye that Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, the pathologist conducting the autopsy, determined was the result of someone violently shaking Logan, and he classified his death as a homicide, the affidavit said.
