A brush fire came close to several homes south of Littlerock on Monday, but firefighters from the West Thurston Fire Authority and partner agencies halted the blaze before it could damage them.

At about 3 p.m. Monday, the West Thurston Fire Authority was dispatched to a report of a “non-threatening” brush fire near the 5700 block of 133rd Avenue.

“While en route, this became a threatening brush fire with multiple structures,” West Thurston Battalion Chief Eric Smith stated in a news release. “Upon arrival, crews found the fire actively spreading southward, prompting immediate action to evacuate and protect nearby structures. Firefighters from West Thurston Fire and multiple mutual aid agencies worked diligently to contain the fire.”

The fire was contained after burning about 2 acres.

“One shed was lost, and flames reached two additional structures,” Smith said. “However, fire crews successfully protected them, preventing any further loss.”

West Thurston Fire was assisted by Tumwater Fire, South Thurston Fire, Olympia Fire, East Olympia Fire, McLane-Black Lake Fire, Griffin Fire and the state Department of Natural Resources, including air support.

“This is a reminder fire season is here,” Smith said. “Now is a great time to prepare your properties and have a go bag ready.”
