In a matchup of the last two unbeatens in Evergreen Conference play, the Bobcats used a six-run bottom of the fourth to dispatch the Bearcats 8-5 on Monday night at the Bishop Athletic Complex.
Three days after tossing a perfect game, W.F. West ace Taylor Tobin struggled in her six innings in the circle by allowing 11 hits and all of the runs were earned. The junior did manage to strike out seven.
“Didn’t have the same pop,” Bearcats head coach Kevin Zylstra said. “She knows she can do better and I know she can do better.”
W.F. West (6-2, 2-1 EvCo) nabbed a 2-0 lead on a Karlee Coleman RBI double followed by Gracie Elam’s RBI single. Aberdeen tied the game on a two-run double in the fourth and took the lead for good on Emelia Kohn’s run-scoring single.
In the fifth, the Bearcats cut the deficit to two and had Elam as the go-ahead run at the plate. On the first pitch she saw, she hit a liner to Bobcats second baseman Cheyanna Kohn, who turned the double play and a fielder’s choice ended the threat.
“One of those frustrating games; we were really close,” Zylstra said. “There’s a reason why they’re in first place and the defending state champions.”
Coleman, Elam and Avery Osborn each recorded two hits. W.F. West will host Centralia in the first of three Swamp Cup meetings on Wednesday.
