A 29-year-old Tacoma man was sentenced Tuesday to 15 years in federal prison for live-streaming the sexual abuse of a toddler in 2020, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Washington.
Demitri Super, who sexually assaulted the child on a Skype video call he had with a person overseas, pleaded guilty in June to producing images of child sexual abuse, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a news release.
During Super’s sentencing, U.S. District Judge Benjamin H. Settle addressed him, saying: “What you did was monstrous,” according to the news release.
“This defendant preyed on a young child at the behest of a co-conspirator he met on the internet,” acting U.S. Attorney Teal Luthy Miller said in a statement. “Mr. Super willingly violated the toddler for a stranger overseas. Congress has established mandatory minimum sentences for such horrific conduct.”
Super was charged with sexually abusing the boy, who was 8 to 12 months old at the time, after federal investigators were notified by foreign authorities that they had seized a recording from a male sex offender in the United Kingdom who had posed as a woman online. The video showed the rape of a toddler, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
U.S. Homeland Security Investigations worked to identify the person seen in the video assaulting the child, including through facial recognition software, leading to Super’s arrest, The News Tribune previously reported. The boy’s parents were notified of the abuse.
“The seriousness of Super’s crime cannot be overstated. He committed vile acts of sexual abuse against a defenseless toddler in his care,” federal prosecutors wrote in seeking the 15-year sentence, according to the news release. “That toddler’s parents had every reason to trust Super with their child, and Super breached that trust in the most devastating manner possible.”
By law, production of child pornography is punishable by a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison and up to 30 years in prison, The News Tribune previously reported.
Super is also facing five charges of child sexual abuse in Pierce County Superior Court stemming from the matter. Earlier this month, the county’s Prosecuting Attorney’s Office requested that Super be released to local custody for proceedings in that case, court records show.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Tuesday that Super’s federal sentence would run concurrently to his sentence in Pierce County. Super will also be on 15 years of supervised release following his federal sentence, according to the office.
