Wind knocks out power in Pacific and Clatsop counties

A high-wind warning has been issued for the Clatsop County coast and South Washington coast from 7:44 a.m. until 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25. This includes the cities of Cannon Beach, Raymond, Astoria, Seaside, Ocean Park, Warrenton, Naselle, Long Beach and Tokeland.

West winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 70 mph are predicted by the National Weather Service in Portland.

As of about 8 a.m., recent observations include a 71 mph gust on the Astoria-Megler US-101 bridge, 53 mph at Astoria Regional Airport, according to Washington Weather Chasers. The Ambient Weather site shows a 58 mph gust near Cape Disappointment.

Power has been knocked out or is flickering in some areas. “Damaging winds will produce widely scattered tree damage and power outages. Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles,” NWS said.

In Clatsop County, 1,322 electricity customers were without power at 8 a.m., according to https://poweroutage.us/area/state/oregon. The statewide outage total was 10,442.



In Pacific County, the Public Utility District said at 8 a.m. that “We are aware of multiple outages affecting both the north end and south end of our county. Raymond: Outage reported affecting customer east of the Oxbow substation to Francis. South County: Report of multiple outages throughout the peninsula. No additional details at this time. “The strongest winds will be along beaches and headlands. Coastal communities will generally see gusts up to 50 to 60 mph,” NWS said.
