Winlock Miller Elementary Holds First School-Wide Spelling Bee

Winlock Miller Elementary School recently held its first school-wide spelling bee.

The Winlock Student Community Advocates (WSCA) announced the winners of the competition, which it hopes will become an annual event, last week.

In early May, each first- through fifth-grade class held individual class spelling bees. The top four spellers from each class were invited to compete in the first-ever school-wide spelling bee, with fifth place serving as alternates.

On Thursday, June 8, students came together in the gym to compete against each other. First and second grades competed against each other first, followed by the third, fourth and fifth grade competition.

WSCA provided T-shirts to all contestants and alternates as well as medals to the top three finishers in each competition.

The top-placing students were:

First and Second Grades:

First place — Garrett Hoven, first grade

Second place — Carolina Wiley, second grade

Third place — Nisla Tanninen, second grade

Fourth place — Maddy Simula, second grade

Third Through Fifth Grades

First place — Isabel Torres, fourth grade

Second place — Landon Leu, third grade

Third place — Cheyenne Cassara, third grade

Fourth place — Hayden Hynson, third grade

Fifth place — Lynae Dalke, fifth grade

“We can't wait to do this again next year,” the WSCA wrote in the news release. “We are all so proud of the hard work students put into preparing for the competition. Big thanks to second-grade teacher Mrs. Farbo for all her hard work organizing this great event, PE teacher Tori Nelson for facilitating and everything the teachers and staff did to help make this happen.”
