The Black Hills girls basketball team suffered its first playoff defeat on Monday, as the Wolves fell to Columbia River 47-33 in the 2A District 4 semifinals.

The Wolves (18-4, 10-2 2A EvCo) defense did the heavy lifting early on, limiting the Rapids to just six points in the first quarter, but Black Hills scored just 11 points in the first half and Columbia River took an eight-point lead into halftime.

Both teams were at their best in the third, as each team scored 15, but the Rapids pulled away in the fourth for the double-digit win.

Tyler Venable led the Wolves with 11 points, while Kylie McMahon added eight. Claire Johnson grabbed 10 rebounds, and she also accounted for four of the team’s five assists.

The Wolves move down to a winner-to-state elimination game against Mark Morris, a match that will be played at W.F. West on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
