Wolves thump Loggers to end two-game skid

A balanced offensive attack fueled the Black Hills boys basketball team to a 67-42 beatdown of Onalaska on the road Tuesday night.

The Wolves doubled up the Loggers in the first half, jumping to a 24-12 halftime lead before blowing the game open in the third quarter. Black Hills outscored Onalaska 19-6 in the third, but according to Onalaska head coach Fred Sturza, the second quarter is when the game got away from the Loggers.

“In the second quarter, we started to panic and force passes and shots. Black Hills made us pay for it,” he said. “Once they made their run, we started hanging our heads and that’s 100% on me. I did a poor job righting the ship.”

Seven Wolves totaled at least six points, including two in double figures with Talon Morrill scoring 15 and Kona Bell tallying 12. The Wolves knocked down six 3-pointers in the victory.

Loggers junior Ethan Thayer had his best outing of the season, scoring a team-best 12 points while defending EvCo MVP James Morgan and holding him to seven points.

“He had the tough matchup of guarding James Morgan and did a great job. He was our most efficient scorer and rebounder,” Sturza said.

Black Hills (6-3) bounced back from a tough two-game stretch last week where the Wolves lost by 20 to Bainbridge and 36 to Bremerton. The Wolves will host Mark Morris Friday night before its EvCo opener at Shelton on Tuesday, Jan. 6.

Onalaska (2-5, 2-4 Central 2B League) gets another non-conference game when it travels to Tenino (2-8) Saturday afternoon.
