The Black Hills softball team headed north to take on River Ridge in Lacey on Friday, but the Wolves were the designated home team, and they walked off the Hawks for a 6-5 win.
Black Hills scored the game’s first three runs, but River Ridge tied it up with a three spot in the top of the third. The Hawks briefly took their only lead of the game in the fifth, but the Wolves responded with two to take the lead back at 5-4.
After the Hawks tied the game in the sixth, the score remained tied at five until Black Hills’ final at-bat.
After back-to-back hits from Madi Malone and Ella Goheen put runners on the corners to start the bottom of the seventh, freshman Maddie Knight delivered an RBI fielder’s choice to give the Wolves the win.
Goheen finished 2 for 4 at the plate with an RBI, while Malone finished 2 for 3 with a double. Knight ended the night with three runs batted in, including the walk-off winner.
Goheen also pitched the first five innings in the circle, giving up five hits and four runs (three earned) while walking three and striking out eight. Freshman Hannah O’Shurak pitched the final two innings and earned the win, allowing two hits and one run while striking out one.
Black Hills (1-0) will return home on Wednesday to host Hoquiam in another non-league matchup.
