A 34-year-old woman chased after a suspected thief after he allegedly stole her nephew's bicycle from a downtown park, according to Olympia police.

About 6:15 p.m. Thursday, July 25, she and her nephew visited the pump track at Isthmus Park in the 400 block of Simmons Street Southwest.

The 11-year-old boy had brought a bicycle and scooter, Olympia police Lt. Paul Lower said. As he was riding his scooter on the track, an 18-year-old grabbed the bike and began riding away, Lower said.

The aunt chased after him, running him down on Fourth Avenue and pulling the man off the bike. As she did so, her cell phone fell to the ground, and as the suspect fell, what appeared to be a handgun also fell to the ground, Lower said.

He allegedly threatened the woman with the gun and ran off, taking her cell phone.

The woman provided a description of the man to police, who found him about 30 minutes later in the area, Lower said. He was arrested on suspicion of first-degree robbery.

The gun turned out to be a BB-gun designed to look like a handgun, Lower said.
