A 70-year-old woman fell 400 feet to her death Friday afternoon while hiking near Horsetail Falls in Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge, according to the Multnomah County sheriff’s office.
The woman’s name has not been released, pending next-of-kin notification.
Cascade Locks Fire notified the sheriff’s office around 1:45 p.m. that the woman had fallen about a half mile up the Horsetail Falls trail and the victim’s friend, who was with her, called 911 for help, according to a sheriff’s news release.
Emergency responders found the woman, who died at the scene from her injuries, the release said. The Multnomah County medical examiner's office also assisted in the recovery.
Horsetail Falls trail, located at 56600 E. Historic Columbia River Highway, is a popular hike, with the 214-foot-tall waterfall next to the parking area, according to the Friends of Columbia Gorge’s trail description.
