ROCHESTER — The Warriors moved the ball, but turnovers clipped them in a 33-13 loss to SWW 1A League Evergreen Division opponent Elma here on Friday. Rochester lost four fumbles, which proved to be the difference.
"We handed it over to them several times and it put us in bad spots," Rochester coach Chris Barnes said. "We couldn't overcome it and you can't turn it over like that and win ballgames."
The Warriors finished the game with 268 yards of offense, led by running back Tyler Yarber's 151 yards on 24 carriers. Yarber also caught four balls for 55 yards and threw a touchdown pass.
"Tyler had a great ballgame," Barnes said. "He did a lot for us."
Quarterback Tyler Gedney was 9 for 13 passing for 99 yards and Ruben Castaneto caught three passes for 72 yards.
"I felt like we moved the ball," Barnes said. "When we didn't have those turnovers, we were moving it."
Elma jumped out to a 17-0 lead before Yarber threw a 44-yard pass to Castaneto and Rochester trailed 17-7 at halftime. Elma pulled away in the third quarter, scoring 16 straight points before Yarber added a 2-yard touchdown run for the Warriors in the fourth.
Elma finished the game with 392 yards of total offense.
Rochester (1-4 overall, 1-2 league) will host Montesano next Friday.
Powerhouse Indians Run Over Seton Catholic
TOLEDO — The Indians prolific offense continues to bulldoze opponents. Toledo scored on three of its first four plays en route to a 60-13 drubbing of SWW 1A League Trico Division foe Seton Catholic here on Friday night.
The Toledo varsity ran 12 plays in total and scored on nine of them. The Indians ran 17 plays, seven different players scored touchdowns and the team racked up 499 yards of total offense.
"We have a lot of kids that are willing and able so we're working on getting them involved," Toledo coach Jeremy Thibault said.
In preparation for their big matchup against Woodland next week, Toledo started things off by throwing the ball. Quarterback Lakota Rakoz completed four passes for 182 yards, three of which went for touchdowns.
"It's impressive," Thibault said. "Lakota works really hard. Unfortunately for him we've been up pretty quick in games and we don't want to throw and run up the score. It was a good night for us to work on throwing. Our offensive line also played really well and did a better job giving him protection."
In the first quarter alone, Rakoz completed a 29-yard scoring pass to Teran Gregson, a 46-yard scoring strike to Ronnie Boone and a 64-yard end zone bomb to Mack Gaul. Cody Meier finished out the early scoring with a 47-yard touchdown run.
Gaul followed that up with a 50-yard run, and Kreed Askin scored as well, before Seton Catholic got its second field goal on the night. Gregson scored the final touchdown of the first half to make it 48-6 Toledo going into the break and it was all cruising after that.
"Defensively, Kreed intercepted the ball and picked up a fumble," Thibault said. "He flies around and hits people. He's a great kid on defense."
Toledo finished with 317 rushing yards. Gaul led all rushers with 109 yards and had three touchdowns, while Meier added 73 and Grant McEwen had 56 with a touchdown.
The Indians (4-1 overall, 4-0 league) will host Woodland next Friday.
Tenino's Shaw Torches Rainier
RAINIER — Beaver quarterback Mac Shaw burned Rainier's secondary for six touchdowns as Tenino rolled to a 62-6 win here Friday night in SWW 1A League Evergreen Division football action.
Shaw was going up against his younger brother Trevor, who was calling plays for Rainier. He showed that age matters, going 16-for-18 for 264 yards for Tenino.
"He was really accurate and made good decisions," Tenino coach Jeff Zenisek said. "He didn't have a great game last week but he really rebounded and responded well in practice. One of those incompletions was dropped."
Shaw connected with Justin Conklin for 20 yards, Devante Harris for 13 yards and Harris again for 55 yards for the Beavers' first three scores of the game. After Shaw ran it in from 26 yards out, he threw two more touchdowns before the half to make it 43-0.
Tenino's first score in the second half was a Thomas Pier 75-yard kickoff return. Shaw threw another touchdown to Harris and Calvin Guzman ran in from 15 yards out for a fourth quarter score.
"The defense gave the offense really good field position," Zenisek said. "The special teams took a role in it too with a blocked punt and a kick return. We played an all-around solid game. We took care of business like we needed to."
Tenino had 418 yards of total offense, while Harris touched the ball four times and scored all four times.
"We got to play a lot of kids and that was good," Zenisek said.
Tenino (5-0 overall, 3-0 league) plays La Center next Friday in a nonleague matchup.
