4.6-magnitude earthquake strikes off Northern California coast

A 4.6-magnitude earthquake roiled ocean waters off the coast of Northern California Friday evening.

The tremor struck at 7:06 p.m. about 129 miles from Piston River, Oregon, and 157 miles from Eureka, California at a depth of just over 6 miles, according to the United States Geological Survey. There are no reports of damage.

Earthquakes of magnitude 4.0-4.9 are considered “light.” Such quakes off the Oregon coast are common and suggest continued strain building along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, which runs from Northern California to British Columbia, Canada.

Experts say there’s a 10-15% likelihood of a severe earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone in the next 50 years. Such a quake might devastate much of the Oregon coast and cause significant damage in Portland.
