After another opponent dropout, Weed excited to defend ExciteFight title in May

W.F. West graduate Kayla Weed followed up her ExciteFight title win last summer with a victory by forfeit in World Fight Championships (WFC) 167 on Saturday at Little Creek Casino and Resort in Shelton.

Weed was scheduled to fight Breona Vaughn for the WFC 145-pound title, but Vaughn dropped out of the fight three days prior to the fight. It’s the second straight opponent that has dropped out against Weed.

While Weed said she “didn’t get the satisfaction of the win” the way she wanted to, she noted that sometimes “that’s how it goes.”

“The fight game is full of disappointments,” Weed said in a Facebook post. “I wanted to show how hard I’ve been working but it’s back to the grind.”

In high school, Weed was one of the first members and founders of the girls wrestling team at W.F. West, and she said that wrestlers helped spark her love for fighting.

“I think wrestling is a great foundation,” Weed said. “I truly just love fighting … MMA is my passion.”

Weed will have the opportunity to defend her title on the next WFC fight card in November, but first, she’s got the opportunity to compete at ExciteFight at Muckleshoot again in May.

Weed said that she’ll either defend her 135-pound title or go for the 145-pound belt.

ExciteFight is set for May 25 at the Muckleshoot Events Center in Auburn.
