East Lewis County veterans who are already American Legion members, along with those who haven’t joined but are curious about the nonprofit, are invited to the upcoming monthly meeting for the American Legion Post 215 in Morton.

American Legion Post 215 Commander Ed Smith mentioned the post’s upcoming meeting details at the Morton City Council meeting on Monday, March 24.

The meeting will be held at the Bob Lyle Community Center, located at 700 Main Ave. in Morton, on Tuesday, April 1, beginning with a potluck at 6 p.m., followed by the meeting at 7 p.m.

While he said the neighboring American Legion post in Onalaska had 28 attendees for its regular monthly meeting he attended earlier this year, he wanted to get the word out as Post 215’s last few meetings have had a low turnout.

“We’re renting the hall here, and I’m praying that I’m gonna get more than six people in here, because we’re going to be electing officers and we’re gonna be talking about events that I want to get done in this community, and we’re going to need volunteers,” Smith said.

Veterans who are not members but are interested in joining the post must bring a copy of their DD-214 to apply.

The American Legion is the largest U.S. veterans nonprofit organization with over 1.6 million members nationwide according to its website.

Founded in 1919 by an act of the U.S. Congress after World War I, the American Legion advocates for all generations of veterans and their families by offering peer-to-peer resources, counseling and more.  To learn more, visit https://www.legion.org/
